Graphics in R

Do you like to learn how to produce statistical plots of data using the R language and environment for statistical computing and graphics?

We will cover the creation of standard plots such as scatterplots, bar plots, histograms, and boxplots and we will spend some time on the underlying model used to produce plots in R so that you can extensively customize these plots. We will also look at producing Trellis plots in R and how to customize them.

Finally, we will introduce the grid graphics system and look at producing unique plots from the ground up using basic components.

Learn all this and more with Dr. Paul Murrell’s online course Graphics in R at Statistics.com. For more details please visit at http://www.statistics.com/graphicsR/.

Who Should Take This Course:
Anyone who needs to produce displays of data, whether for exploratory or confirmatory analysis. R graphics is particularly suited to producing publication-quality plots, so this course is particularly useful for anyone who needs to produce articles or reports or even web sites containing plots.

Course Program:

Course outline: The course is structured as follows

SESSION 1: Basic Plots
  • An overview of R Graphics
  • Functions for producing standard plots
  • Controlling colour, fonts, etc

SESSION 2: Customising Plots
  • Adding extra data or labels to a plot
  • Mathematical formulas on plots
  • Plotting multiple plots on a page

SESSION 3: The Lattice Package (Trellis plots)
  • Lattice formulas
  • Multipanel displays
  • Panel functions
  • Customising lattice plots

SESSION 4: Grid Graphics (drawing pictures)
  • Graphical primitives and units
  • Viewports and layouts
  • Customising lattice plots

The instructor, Dr. Paul Murrell, is noted members of the R development community. Dr. Paul Murrell is Senior Lecturer in the Department of Statistics at the University of Auckland, New Zealand. Dr. Murrell has been a member of the core development team for R since 1999, with a focus on the graphics system in R. He is a fellow of the American Statistical Association, and is an Associate Editor for Computational Statistics and The Journal of Statistical Software.

Participants can ask questions and exchange comments with Dr. Paul Murrell via a private discussion board throughout the period. The course takes place online at statistics.com in a series of 4 weekly lessons and assignments, and requires about 15 hours/week. Participate at your own convenience; there are no set times when you are required to be online.

For Indian participants statistics.com accepts registration for its courses at special prices in Indian Rupees through its partner, the Center for eLearning and Training (C-eLT), Pune.
